Kings, Queens and Dukes - Singing Day Workshop
Sat, 29 Sep 2018
BRILLIANT !!
The cakes were delicious, the singing right royally rousing and the entertainment endless.... In the end we had just over 90 singers signed up for our second singing day "Kings Queens and Dukes" - most made it to the event and everyone had a brilliant time!
We sang Coronation anthems including "Zadok the Priest" and "I was glad" as well as Duke Ellington pieces from the 'Sacred Concert' and "It don't mean a thing"... "swing, swing, swing Yeah!"
If you didn't get involved, watch out for the next one it will be worth it!
Well done to all who attended and special thanks to the helpers and bakers who helped make it such a great success!
Here's what we did in September 2018....
Come and join Weston Choral and Highbridge and Burnham Choral Society for a singing day entitled Kings, Queens and Dukes.
Under our guest conductor, David Ogden and pianist, we will rehearse and perform music composed for royal occasions ('I was glad', 'Zadok the priest', to be included) and music by Duke Ellington (music from the Sacred concert and 'It don’t mean a thing', to be included).
David is a professional conductor and composer who has conducted choirs on BBC radio, and his music is broadcast regularly. He is Choral Music Adviser for the BBC’s hit series Call The Midwife, and worked with the Royal Mail Choir in the BBC Two series The Choir; Sing While You Work.
He conducts numerous choirs in the Bristol area including the City of Bristol Choir, Exultate Singers and the Bristol Youth Choir.
It was an exciting and rousing day of singing where we worked on these pieces from scratch and culminated in a relaxed performance at the end of the day.
Our venue was St Mark’s Church in Worle (5 minutes from Junction 21 on M5).

The Glory and the Glamour - Singing Day Workshop
Sat, 20 May 2017
We had a Fabulous Day Singing the majestic Vivaldi Gloria and some brilliant vocal arrangements of James Bond songs....!
On Saturday 20th May 2017 we joined forces with Burnham and Highbridge Choral Society and other local singers to have our first singing day workshop. We had David Ogden as our guest conductor. David is well known in Bristol for his work with Exultate who have sung on the BBCs Songs of Praise. You can read more about David by clicking here to view his website.
On the day we had around 80 singers and the whole event went very well indeed - we had lots of positive comments regarding the welcome people received, good organisation, choice of music etc. David Ogden was brilliant gave lots of encouragement and helpful direction as well as being very humourous...
The idea of the singing workshop days is to extend our repertoire and learn some new music in a day. We rehearse morning and afternoon and end with a very informal concert. Having a guest conductor will teach us new techniques and give us different insights into how we sing and perform. We don't have to be note perfect or polished by the end of the day.....although we will work hard to get it as good as possible in the time allowed. To support singers who may be a little worried about the music reading aspect the parts for our first piece, Vivaldi's Gloria was made available on our website via the Fletcher's link...and Howard kindly provided an introductory support session in between our Armed Man concert on May 6th and May 20th. As a total contrast David will also led us in a selection of vocal arrangements of James Bond themes...hence our workshop title' The Glory and the Glamour'.
The cost of the day was £15. This covered hiring our conductor, pianist, music and the venue, St Mark's Church, Queensway, Worle.
Many people were very keen to attend future Singing Day Workshops and therefore a lot of thought is now going into planning the next one! All in all a thoroughly uplifting, educational, entertaining and rewarding experience all round.
